Loomed without electricity, minimal water use, and
little natural gas for drying our products share a place in the green and
renewable movement for the manufacturing process. All work is produced in the
California studio and is made to order so there is no creation of excess
inventory.
Canyon and Design Series Collections
Each pillow is hand loomed, washed, steam blocked to shape pattern, and lined to
create a pillow that has a firm structure while maintaining surface
softness. A knitting loom is used as it offers more design flexibility and allows the yarn to come to the surface.
Each design is like a piece of abstract art with an organic influence.
Unlike a print, which can easily be made larger or smaller, Canyon
designs are made 1 at a time on a hand-loom in a method somewhat like a
tapestry. This is why some designs are only available in one size. A
wide selection of different yarns, colors, and textures are combined
with hand manipulation to create the organic design elements. These
factors make this Collection impossible to produce en mass. Most
textiles today use the same yarn throughout because commercial looms
usually need yarns of similar size, stretch properties, and
smoothness. The Canyon Collection exploits these varying material
properties to create designs unlike anything in the market.
This Collection uses various natural fibers such as wool, cotton,
mohair, llama, and sometimes a bit of alpaca. Chosen for its color
range and natural properties, mohair predominates in this collection.
It is lustrous and strong and naturally resists dirt and wear. Mohair
has a hollow core that does not transfer heat so it looks warm but
feels cool to the skin.
Designing and writing patterns is a somewhat organic process itself.
Colored pencil sketches are usually a start, but structure and
designing takes place on loom. Due to the varying nature of all the
yarns, the result can never really be known until it is fully washed.
The process for one design can take a couple days to a week to get the
final result.
Product care
Professionally dry clean only without steam. Occasionally wool or
other animal fibers may pill or fuzz on the surface, a natural
characteristic of these yarns. Any pilling may be removed from flat
surfaces using tools such as are sold for sweaters. Pilling on highly
textured or more delicate areas should be carefully removed by hand.
Pieces may be spot cleaned as necessary. Dab spot with clean cool
water dampened cloth and blot dry, do not rub. Do not use any cleaning
products.
Felt Collection
The technique used for this collection creates an effect unique in the market. Mohair and wool fiber is felted into linen fabric creating a texture that is slightly raised, very compact, and velvety to the touch. Layering of the fibers during the felting process creates beautiful color blends. The process is very time intensive and so each design has been priced individually. As with all our work, everything is artisan made in the studio and impossible to duplicate commercially.
Product care
Pillow cover is hand washable or may be dry-cleaned.
To wash, fill sink with cool water and a little mild soap such as shampoo, gently wash but do not wring. Rinse in cool water and pat out excess, blot between 2 towels and air dry. Cover may be steam ironed to smooth any wrinkles.
